Advanced Storytelling

Day 2
Day 2, january 24, 2006
We began with a look at the pre-class discussion involving getting out early, watching favorite tv shows. As we outlined the conversation we began to find possible themes that we could connect to other stories. We saw how the Cinderella story fit with programs like American Idol and The Bachelor. We found ideas about truth and believability in the discussion of Paris Hilton's show.
We moved from the blackboard to the table and mapped the conversation using hex cards. To the growing "constellation" of stories we added personal anecdotes (Leah's story about counseling a school friend as the daughter of a doctor) and traditional stories (Tsarista Harpist) that could be placed beside the initial conversation.
Our task was to discover opportunities for stories out of an ordinary conversation.
I shared the concept of structuring stories along the image of a growing flower with the 3 actions: to place, to reveal, to relate.
We looked at those actions in the telling of an individual story and then applied them to the structuring of a story program, asking which stories serve the opening phase of placing, which serve as revealing, and which as relating.
I handed out copies of Padraic Colum's 1927 essay Storytelling Old And New for discussion next week.
Assignment: Come prepared to tell a story. Be ready to discuss Padraic Colum's essay.
