Beowulf in Appalachia
I just saw a fine story theatre treatment of Beowulf set in pioneer Appalachia at Triad Stage in Greensboro. The play is called "Brother Wolf" and is a new piece written by Preston Lane, the artistic director of Triad Stage. He pits an itinerant mountain preacher, Brother Wolf, against ancient demons living in a mountain sink hole. It is a great mixture of the epic poem, mountain Christianity, and Kabuki staging using stylized fights and masked stagehands. The show also features some excellent original and traditional mountain music by Laurelyn Dossett of the group, Polecat Creek.
